Weekend getaway…. Kaneri caves…

Drained after the weeks long work one generally desires a calm weekend a good sleep a lazy afternoon some movies in between and with the weather being all cool and pleasant this Sunday seemed like a perfect day for rest… But then that’s not me (well at least for this weekend) so breaking from the routine I decided to do something different.. The rainy season is on the greenery is all around the clouds have cloaked the sky and it seemed like a perfect scenario to take out my bike and zoom…

So plan one.. Bike ride to pawna Lake (a huge fresh water Lake in lonavala) and then trek to tikona Fort.. All was planned out I was gonna go solo.. But then I thought why not call a friend to tag along… Called up one friend he said yes then he said his another friend is coming so he can’t come so in the end he was out… Called another friend he said yes.. But then he said his family won’t allow so he tagged out… (and yeah even his scooty was not allowed for the trek so…)  then called my best buddy he said yes initially but then he also said no.. But since he is my brother he chalked out a plan B… A trip to Sanjay gandhi national park and a visit to kaneri caves.. And thus we decided to go there…

Woke up early morning… Mom was still saying that the weather dept ppl have predicted thunderstorms and heavy rainfall for today.. But to my amuse when I saw outside the sun was shining bright and there was not a single cloud to be seen in the sky.. Lucky day I thought…

Got ready had my breakfast and reached Dadar from there with me on my bike and my friend on his we started the journey.. He was wearing his windcheater but midway he realized that it was useless and removed it.. We were like screw these weather dept ppl heavy rains lol (guess the Lord of rain was having a evil smile from above at that time)  we went along reached the  National Park and started riding ahead..

Entry to the National Park is a easy process u pay the fees at the entrance and you are free to go.. Best part being u can ride the bike all the way up to the top of the hill where the caves are located.

The National Park is a site to see during the monsoons… Lush greenery all around narrow streams of water running here and there monkeys dancing from tree to tree some sitting on top of parked vehicles.. So trying to figure out why some age old humans are dancing in a pond of water and some chalking out a plan to snatch something from a distracted human (may be)

So surrounded by this beautiful scenery we started riding.. Speed limit 20kmph.. And we duly followed it.. Who the hell wants to rush things when u have so much beauty and peace around to soak yourself in.. So slow and steady we went.. The narrow ghat uphill was a ride to remember as well.. The twists and turns the passing by persons along and of course the usual gazing apes and mother nature beside…

image

Reaching on top and also along the way u can find many locals selling snacks.. Raw mango.. Boiled groundnut.. Star fruit some even had cucumber to offer…. I craved for the tangy raw mango and had one there.. My friend had a cucumber with some red chili powder and salt applied to it..

After this short break there we were.. Just steps away from one of the marvels of Maharashtra.. The kaneri caves… Dating back to the first century BC the caves are a fine example of the brilliance of human mind work and dedication… Carved out of the huge mountain the caves depict various statues and sculpture of Lord gautam Buddha carved out magnificently.. The stupa is a beautiful place.. Later converted to monasteries it has separated caves for the monks to live in.. Inside bed are carved out of the stone and entrances have beautiful sculptures all over.. Texts written in the then bramhi language are still visible on the walls.

So after we gazed at the beauty of the sculpture we started our sight seeing.. Visiting cave by cave snapping the beauty in our camera and clicking selfies on the way… And yeah it also started raining :p so camera went in the bag and we decided to enjoy the rain.. Climbing from one cave to another we saw many tourists families foreigners sight seeing.. Some had even brought lunch along and were having it… On the way up a nice steam of water was running and along its course many people were playing in the water… Getting drenched splashing water on each other.. Yeah a awesome sight to see…

Well after watching others enjoy how can one resist the urge to go in the water lol  so we found ourselves a nice spot along the stream and went in… The water was nice and cold it was raining from above… Cool wind was blowing… Now that’s what’s called a perfect getaway..

So after spending more than an hour in water we decided to start our journey back home.. We went in one of the caves got changed dried ourselves (which went to waste)  and we started our journey back.

And just as we hit the highway.. The rain God started his show.. It was so dark what was visible on the road was just the taillights  of vehicles moving ahead.. Strong winds trying to sway our bikes thunders cracking Loud and strong… What all fun we made of the weather dept.. Seems to have come back to haunt us :p but hey riding in the rain is also a darn awesome thing to do.. So we even enjoyed that.. But rather than 80-90 our speeds were reduced to 30-40 kmph.. Finally reaching the town side we went to our local restaurant and ate till our tummy was about to burst..
Back to hostel a hot water bath awaited us… Had a nice bath and went straight to my bed… A good night’s sleep awaits ahead

A day well spent indeed… Hope next weekend has a new adventure in store 🙂
